The 18 counties of Southeastern Oklahoma form a region traditionally known as Little Dixie. This hardcover, nonfiction book includes a 30,000 word narrative of Little Dixie's history that goes back for centuries. The region's relationship to world history, the growth of the U.S., and the westward movement of the frontier are interwoven into the story. Integral to the narrative is the history of the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations prior to and during removal into Indian Territory, along with the demise of the sovereignty of Native American tribes, and the formation of Oklahoma. Making the story come alive are over 125 images from museums, universities, and art and historical societies, as well as numerous photographers. A published author and historian, Carol Mowdy Bond is a member of Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and the Choctaw Nation Artist Registry.
